LAP Newsletter

June 2024

Dear fellow PhD Candidates,

As warmer weather is fast approaching (hopefully), we would like to invite you to enjoy it together, during our upcoming boat trip in July. In addition, we have two other interesting sessions planned - a Ridderprint webinar on Innovative Thesis Printing, and the first workshop of our Social Safety Campaign. Keep reading for updates on the Guidance Committee regulations and on publication policy - we believe you will find them of high importance.

We specifically want to highlight that the Guidance Committee regulations are now published. During the PhD closed door session in October 2023 a strong wish came forward from the PhD community to have more clarity on what the GC should do. We are very happy that the LUMC Graduate School listened to our concerns and that the GC will play an important role in PhD supervision from now on. Read more below and make sure to check the composition of your GC before 1st of August.

Furthermore, If you want to be part of our board and contribute to the necessary changes in our academia, please join us! Since the autumn of 2023, the LAP Board has taken part in more initiatives, such as organizing closed door sessions, being involved in Academia in Motion and, in limited capacity, in the selection of the new Dean and in the development of new policies that impact LUMC PhD Candidates. As a Board, we are fully committed to representing the rights of PhD Candidates and wish to contribute to the change taking place at LUMC, so we have gratefully and bravely taken on new challenges. However, we find ourselves in need of more Board Members to be able to sustain our efforts.

Best wishes,
The LAP Board

Workshop on Social Safety Campaign, including free lunch!
3.07.2024, 1pm to 2:30pm @ J-01-116
The theme of our first Social Safety workshop is Intimidation, inappropriate behavior, and bullying. Our speaker, Susanne Tauber, is an expert on gender equality, academic bullying, and policy-practice gaps from UvA. Her research delves into the complexities of addressing issues like health disparities and gender inequality, exploring the impact of morality, power dynamics, and identity. Despite her accolades, Susanne's journey faced challenges, including controversial incidents resulting in her dismissal from Groningen University. Her story, detailed in a publication critiquing 'equal opportunity programs' for women, stirred debate and highlighted systemic issues in academia. Click here to sign up!

Want to be part of change in the LUMC? Join our Board!
We are looking for more General Board Members to join us!

As a general board member, your responsibilities will likely include attending board meetings, organizing events or initiatives, communicating with other PhD Candidates and faculty members, and supporting the overall functioning of the board and its objectives. Dutch is not required for this role!

In return, you get to learn about the ins and outs of the LUMC, work with a diverse board of motivated fellow PhD candidates who want to make a difference for the PhD community, and you can have the opportunity to implement your ideas and see them flourish in practice! We look forward to meeting you! Send us your CV and motivation letter!

New Guidance Committee Regulations
We are glad to share this major step in improving the quality of the supervision process. Please click here to read about the new Guidance Committee Regulations. The Graduate School will organize two walk-in sessions on the 20th of June and on the 4th of July. Make sure to read the regulations and review your GC before 1st of August.

Academia in Motion
As part of the Academia in Motion program, the LUMC and Leiden University promote the adoption of open science practices. To put open science into practice, we aim to open up our research processes, from the initial idea to the final outputs. A key step in the transition to open science is to reshape our approach to scientific publishing. The Open Scientific Publishing think tank has therefore prepared a draft strategic publication policy. To make sure the strategic publication policy is well-aligned with the needs and interests of the academic community, your feedback on the policy is essential.(s.meeuwsen@lumc.nl)

Open door session in Q3
After the Closed Door session on PhD Supervision, the Graduate School organized 4 Open Door sessions for everyone involved in PhD supervision. The notes of these Open Door sessions can be found here. Another Closed Door session will follow in Q3, during which we will discuss the advancements made by the LUMC since the first edition. It is important that the LUMC PhD Candidates Community is well-represented! Stay tuned.
