LAP Newsletter

December 2022

Dear fellow PhD candidates,

It is already the last month of the year. Unfortunately, this is usually a very busy time, but don't forget to take some rest and to enjoy Christmas and New Year's Eve. If you are unable to celebrate Christmas with your family, read about our Christmas Buddy system below!

Also, save the date for our PhD day on 19 April next year!

Please contact us if you have any questions or suggestions.

Best wishes,
The LAP board

Celebrating Christmas together: become a Christmas buddy!

Now that Sinterklaas has left our country, we can look forward to the most wonderful time of the year: Christmas! Unfortunately, some of you may not be able to celebrate it with your loved ones. Therefore, we would like to create a buddy-system among all LUMC employees and students. So do you want to celebrate Christmas with a colleague or
(PhD-) student or do you want to open your home to celebrate Christmas at your place? Please sign in as a buddy by completing this form. Deadline: 15 December

14.12.2022 - Christmas drinks - Grand Cafe de Stal
Wow, thank you all for buying a ticket! Unfortunately, we are completely sold out. If you have bought a ticket and are unable to attend, please let us know, as we currently have a waiting list.

23-27.01.2023 – (Bio)medical winter school: ethical and regulatory challenges in the era of open science, data sharing in Life Sciences & Health
Together with Eurolife, LUMC organizes a 5-day winter school on DATAETHICS. This course offers a unique opportunity to interact during lectures from leading and established cross-disciplinary experts in data curation and privacy, data use, ethics, biomedicine, and related fields. Through a matrix of lectures, interactive sessions and small group assignments, we create a flexible environment allowing for students to acquire new knowledge outlined in a dilemma story. This approach furthers the ability of students to apply newly-gained knowledge in true-to-life scenarios. The course also offers ample opportunities for networking with peers and thematic experts from different leading European medical institutions, as well as external speakers from academia and industry. Some of the topics covered in the DATAETHICS Winter School are:

  • Ethically managing open science and data sharing: lessons from the COVID pandemic
  • Infrastructure and machine learning allowing distributed data exploitation
  • AI and Big Data: ethical and legal considerations
  • FAIR-data and VODAN Africa
  • Diversity aspects linked to safety for exoskeleton and related med tech
  • Practical experience from DPO Consultancy

Subsidiemogelijkheden MD-PhD studenten interne geneeskunde

Vanaf heden kunnen studenten in het MD-PhD-traject een financiële compensatie ter hoogte van 10.000 euro uit het Prof. dr. A.E. Meinders Fonds aanvragen indien zij naar het buitenland gaan voor een deel van hun traject voor onderzoeksprojecten. Het fonds is een gift van voormalig LUMC-collega Prof. dr. A.E.

08.12.2022 - SmB is back with a banger: Fermentation Special @ Brewery Pronck!
Get ready for the last café of the year 2022. Science meets business is organizing a Fermentation Special! They will have three speakers, each with a different business angle on fermentation. And the best: It will be inside a brewery with complementary drinks fresh from the barrel. Click here to register.

13.12.2022 - Human Capital event: Jong talent vinden, binden en ontwikkelen? – Grand Café de Stal @ 16.00uur (Dutch only)
Gildeprint InDesign workshop
Gildeprint (thesis print shop) has offered to give an InDesign workshop about designing the lay out of your thesis. The workshop will take approximately one hour and will provide tips and tricks. Don't expect an in-depth explaining of InDesign but more a rough overview. Sytske Anne Bergstra has followed the workshop in 2019 and can tell you more about the content of the workshop in detail. Please let Lotte van Ouwerkerk know if you are interested in attending, at least 10 PhDs are needed to organize the workshop. The idea is to organize this workshop in January/February 2023, but a final date will be scheduled based on your availability.

Student well-being
Leiden University has a wide range of support if needed. But where can you find it? This roadmap is a handy overview.

Handling threats or intimidation
Unfortunately, a lot of scientists experience hate reactions or threats during their career. That is why the website SafeScience (WetenschapVeilig) has been launched on November 7th 2022. This website is available 24/7 to help scientists find support in case of threats, intimidation or hate speech. For more information visit the Leiden University news page.
