March 2022

Dear fellow PhD candidates,

We hope you are doing well and did not get too much in trouble because of storm Dudley, Eunice and Franklin. Some excited news: we are finally organizing a live "borrel" again! We will keep you updated on this as soon as possible.

Last month, three new members joined our board, Elise van Wijk, Carlijn Hoekx, and Thaïs Tong, to help us organize some events in the upcoming years.

This newsletter contains several events and courses for the coming months.

Best,
The LAP board

08.04.2022 - IEEE Milestone Award
The Cardiology department of the LUMC and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will organize the symposium: IEEE Milestone Award “String Galvanometer”. Experts in the field will present the technical and medical background of the string galvanometer and the electrocardiograph. Contemporary and future possibilities of the electrocardiography and electrophysiology will also be discussed. At the end of the symposium, the renown‘Einthoven lecture’ will be given by professor Katja Zeppenfeld. Click here for more information and to register.

PhD thesis spreadsheet
Many of you asked if we can help with bringing PhD candidates together in order to get a discount on thesis printing. Click here for a public google spreadsheet in which you can leave your contact details to get in touch with other PhDers who are printing their thesis soon. It is your own responsibility to get in touch with each other and organize the group discount with the printing company. You might as well consider your PhD thesis as mobile app: a sustainable alternative saving costs.

March 2022 - Masterclass Artificial Intelligence in health care (in Dutch)
Waar: Mariaplaats 14, Utrecht (5 minuten lopen vanaf centraal station)

Book on Scientific Data Visualization now available
One of the speakers of our last PhD day (Prof. Maarten Boers) has just released his new book on scientific data visualization. This is useful, because good research can only be impactful if the message gets across. Tables and graphs are essential for scientific communication, but those we see rarely meet their full design potential. To date, progress in data visualization has not resulted in specific guidance for biomedical science. This book aims to fill these gaps, using a hands-on, stepwise approach to make scientific tables and graphs that work. From design principles and basic forms to complex matrix graphs, high-impact publications and presentations. You can click here to receive a free digital inspection copy or order it directly by clicking here with the following 20% discount code: BOERS20.

Reducing the administrative burden in Research: ‘Ontregel het Onderzoek’
An initiative from a group of PhD candidates to reduce administrative load in research
In 2019, a number of PhD candidates of the Amsterdam UMC started an initiative called ‘Ontregel het Onderzoek’, to reduce (futile) administrative burden when conducting research. Current regulatory guidelines for research have become increasingly extensive resulting in increased monitoring, bigger trial master files and completing administrative forms only for the sake of having them completed. This results in higher costs to conduct studies. To tackle these problems, they successfully joined policy making organizations that are involved in the law making process for study conduct. They suggest to ‘ontregel’ your research yourself by evaluating rules/tasks within your organization that don’t add any value to safety or quality of data in research, and propose to lose these. If you want to read more or register for their newsletter, check out their website.

Walaeus is looking for a new Library Committee
