Dear fellow PhD Candidates,

We ended last year with our Christmas Drinks at Annie's! It was simply amazing, a heartfelt thanks goes to all of you who showed up! We start the new year with the "PhD Safe Space Sweet". Curious what it is and how you can nominate someone? Read on! Likewise, please keep in mind that the "Open Door Session" was rescheduled to the 5th of February (see more details below).

Open Door Session follow-up (followed by drinks)
5.02, 4pm-6pm @ Lecture Hall 6/Burumazaal
It has been one year since our last Open Door Session. Curious to know where we are now, one year later? We will be joined by Bob Siegerink (Graduate Schoool) and Marlies Reinders (Dean).
After the session drinks will be offered by the LUMC! A nice opportunity to further discuss the future of the LUMC PhD community. Let us know if you will join by filling in this form!

PhD Representation
PhD Safe Space Sweet

As part of our commitment to advocate for social safety at LUMC, the LUMC Association for PhD Candidates (LAP) is excited to introduce the PhD Safe Space Sweet! This initiative gives PhD candidates the opportunity to thank someone who has made a meaningful impact on their personal journey—whether through support, encouragement, or simply being there when it mattered most.

We are excited to announce our first winner: Thijs van Osch! Thijs, professor in Radiology, has been recognized by the board for his exceptional support and kindness. Thijs regularly checks in with his PhD candidates. For example at the daily 11 o’clock meeting or at the Friday Drinks at Hepatho. We believe Thijs embodies the spirit of a true safe space during the challenging PhD journey.

The award was presented in collaboration with the Graduate School Council, supported by the Dean of the LUMC, Prof. Marlies Reinders—who was unfortunately unable to attend this time. In her stead, Jan Schoones of the Graduate School Council joined us to help celebrate a supportive academic environment.

Do you have someone who made a difference in your PhD journey? This could be a fellow PhD candidate, supervisor, librarian or someone else at the LUMC whose contribution should not go unnoticed. Nominate them for the next PhD Safe Space Sweet which will be awarded!
in March! Share their story and let us celebrate the unsung heroes of academia.

Check out the heartwarming picture of Thijs receiving his award below!

We also want to thank the organizers of the “Preprint-taart” for inspiring us!

LAP connected Department PhD Boards
On Monday 13th of January we brought together PhD representatives from various LUMC departments for the first time. We discussed the role they take on in their departments, the PhD environment and wider LUMC issues. This was an insightful discussion on the local consequences of LUMC-wide policies. We’ll repeat this meeting every quarter. Was your department not represented and do you want to join the next meeting? Send us an email lap@lumc.nl!

Interim Election for Participation Council in February 2025
Because some places have become available in the participation council, an interim election will take place from 17 to 23 February 2025 for both the works council (OR) and the subcommittees (OCs)
PhD candidates are currently not represented in the Participation Council (ondernemingsraad), do you want to change this? Put yourself forward and if you’re elected you will join the council or subcommittee until April 2026. More info here on the elections here and the council in general here.
