LAP in 2019 - A look back

Last year was a great year for LAP. In winter we had the annual joint party of LAP-LEO to warm-up our hearts. In spring, we had the Dutch Taxes and Culture workshop and the Italian borrell. According to you, our biennial Career event was very well received. We ended the year with two workshops, the SmB cafe, a lecture,  and an amazing Christmas borrel.

Thanks for joining and here are some photos to remember them :)

Time’s up for he and him as the default pronouns for doctors
Do you know of this well-known riddle: a father and son have a terrible accident. The father is killed and the son is taken to the hospital for emergency surgery, but the surgeon enters the room and says, “I can’t operate—that boy is my son.” When asked who the surgeon might be, a surprising number of people can’t imagine that the surgeon might be the boy’s mother. Well no more!

Wash your hands, Brother John!
This is a song on the nursery rhyme brother John (NL: vader Jakob), with changed lyrics with the steps to wash your hands correctly in a clinical setting. Does it rhyme?!!

Internal Information

Leiden University Courses are FREE again!

Registration fee
As of 1 January 2020, the courses and career coaching service will be free of charge for employed (those who have access to SAP Self Service) and contract (those who are on a scholarship) PhD candidates at Leiden University and LUMC. In addition, you will no longer need permission from your supervisor to sign up. This will make it much easier for you to sign up for courses and coaching. In the first few weeks, you may still be asked for an SAP number upon registration. If you are, please enter a SAP number, but keep in mind that the fee is €0,- (and no invoice will be sent to your institute). Please note that if you are an external PhD candidate (buiten-promovendus) you will still be charged for courses and will, therefore, have to provide an SAP number when you register.

Refund of the participation fee
If you have already registered for courses in 2020, you can get a refund for the participation fee to your institute. This will be done automatically and will not require any action on your part.

Cancellation fee
Even though the courses will be free of charge for you, some terms and conditions will still apply: if you register for a course, you are expected to attend. If you have signed up for a course but do not show up, or if you cancel within two weeks of the starting date of the course, you will be charged with a €100 cancellation fee.

Upcoming courses from Leiden University

You can still sign up for the courses below (check-out quotes from PhD candidates who have already participated in the course). Some courses have multiple start dates. You will find these on the right-hand side of the course webpage under 'Course dates >Start date'. Some courses haven't been scheduled yet for 2020, so more is to appear in the coming few weeks. You can find a list of all PhD courses via this link (click 'view courses'). Please note that the deadline for registration is two weeks before the start date of the course.

LERU Doctoral Summer School
