COVID-19 and Sars-CoV-2 Research in Leiden and the LUMC
Time: 16.30 – 18.15
Where: Microsoft Teams
Registration: click here

As you probably know, scientists of the LUMC and Leiden are world players in researching SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. We were curious what they are exactly up to, and are now organizing a webinar with top-researchers from the LUMC and Leiden, especially for PhD candidates.

There will be several interesting speakers, including LUMC corona-expert prof. dr. Snijder and dr. Wegman from Janssen Vaccines. Also, there will be time to ask questions.

Please don’t forget register for the webinar, as we will send the link to follow the webinar in Microsoft Teams to everyone who registered. If you have registered already, you don’t have to register again.

LAP Christmas present
This year has been one of the weirder ones. On top of an already serious situation, we also dread not being able to plan a christmas borrel with you. As a little consolation, we want to give you a christmas gift. What kind of gift can we offer with this year's budgetary surplus due to not planning any events you ask? Good question! We are offering LIMITED EDITION LAP CHRISTMAS SOCKS.

Now we invite you to our 2nd CTO meeting that will be held on December 8th, 17:00-18:30u.
The topic of this meeting will be ‘Technology as inspiration’ or how technology can support innovation in translational research at the LUMC.

We hope to welcome as many of you as possible again.

Faces of Science
The KNAW, Jonge Akademie and NEMO Kennislink have opened a new round to nominate talented PhD candidates for "Faces of Science". PhDs can be nominated by KNAW members or Jonge Akademie members. You can get in touch with members of either the KNAW or Jonge Akademie at your institution to get nominated.
In Faces of Science, PhD candidates provide an insight into life as an academic, targeted at university and high school students. Because this population will be largely Dutch speaking, the nomination round is primarily targeted at PhDs who are able to write in Dutch.

BioBusiness Winter School
After taking the 2020 BioBusiness Summer School online due to COVID-19 and receiving very positive feedback from participants, we have decided to make the online format a project on its own, running alongside the traditional in-person Summer School. The three days programme taking place online on 3-5 February 2021 is a balance between theoretical sessions focusing on key knowledge of main business topics and interactive sessions with business leaders giving their insights in the world of European Life Sciences companies. A great way for MScs, PhDs and postdocs considering a career switch from academia to industry.

Early-bird rates are still available until 15 November. More information: https://www.hyphenprojects.nl/bbws

Grant Application Course
During this intensive two-day online course participants will be taught by seasoned scientists, grant application experts who have reviewed hundreds of grants, assessors from funding bodies and many more. The next edition will take place online on 10 & 11 March 2021 and is a great programme for anyone looking at developing a vital skill for their career in academia.
The Early-bird runs until 16 December. More information: https://www.bcfcareer.nl/grant-application-course

Special announcement

We are excited to share with you that.. LAP has launched its own website!

Our aim was to create a place in which all information for PhD candidates in gathered, to ensure at least the administration and official stuff of everyone's PhD period is smooth sailing.

Most importantly, the website contains the PhD folder. This faq-style webpage contains the answers to all questions you might have, such as:

"Where can I find courses I can follow?

"What should I do when I have problems with my supervisor?

"How many hours of academic activities must I register in Converis?"

The website and PhD folder is a work in progress. If you have any suggestions or miss anything, please let us know: lap@lumc.nl
