LAP Newsletter

November 2020

Dear fellow PhD candidates,

This november we are working behind the screens to organize a webinar on COVID-19 research by researchers from Leiden and the LUMC, which is super exciting! Keep an eye out on our social media (Facebook) and (LinkedIn) for updates! (protip, if you follow us you will be notified).

Even in times like these we should not forget to think about our own projects and career. Therefore, we have organized another interesting event especially organized for LUMC PhD candidates: Bridging the gap between academia and industry. More on this below.

Also, the CAT project organizers are still looking for PhD candidates to supervise a student during a literature study. Scroll down to read more!

The rest of this newsletter is filled with online events and tips for PhD candidates that we have gathered for you. Enjoy!

LAP Webinar on COVID-19 Research

As you probably know, scientists of the LUMC and Leiden are world players in researching SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. We were curious what they are exactly up to, which is why we are organizing a webinar with top-researchers from the LUMC and Leiden, especially for you PhD candidates. Notable keynote speakers: Researchers from Janssen Vaccines will talk about the ins and outs of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development, and the introduction will be given by coronavirus expert Prof. dr. Snijder from the department of medical microbiology.

The date is to be determined, so keep an eye out on our social media and next newsletter. You can already register for the webinar via this link.

CAT-project
The CAT-project (Critical Appraisal of a Topic) is a yearly course for medical students in the LUMC. This year, the CAT-project team is looking for PhDs who have a relevant (clinical) question that they would like to have answered by a literature study. The student will be supported by the course faculty in preparing a search strategy and critically reviewing the literature. As a supervisor, you will guide this process and read and comment on the writing. This can be added to you portfolio in Converis (1 ECTS). For more information or to register as a supervisor please send an email CAT-project@lumc.nl.

Status of ongoing or upcoming courses
HRM Learning & Development courses are offered online until December 31, 2020. This is done with the well-known professional trainers and in an interactive manner. Please register in the usual way. Click here for the complete overview of upcoming courses.

Are you a PhD/ Post-Doc interested in the business side of research? Are you interested in starting a company and need to know how to write a business plan/raise financing? Please see the following workshops on offer by Luris.

If you have any questions, please contact hrmopleidingen@bb.leidenuniv.nl.

Update Graduate School Module (GSM) in Converis
New field in PhD admission
The primary thesis advisor is responsible for registration of his/her PhD student in the GSM. Besides the research programme, the primary thesis advisor is now required to select the research theme for new PhD students. The Graduate School Office will take care of completing this information for PhD students who have already been admitted to the Graduate School.

Registration of hours in Portfolio
The PhD student must build up a Portfolio of courses, lectures and other educational events which will eventually be published in the PhD thesis. The field that indicates the study load in hours for these events is now mandatory. Together, the Specific milestones and the Fixed milestones should total 280 hours: 140 hours research specific and 140 hours transferable skills activities. In 2018, these Leiden University regulations were communicated by the dean.

Open Access deal
Great news, the Open Access deal that Universties of the Netherlands have with a lot of publishers, has been expanded with a major publisher: Elsevier. This means that Dutch authors do not have to pay an open access fee anymore.

Survey Informal care
This year the COVID-19 pandemic has been an important part of our lives. To what extent has the COVID-19 pandemic influenced doing your PhD, your mental wellbeing, and possibly giving informal care? Results from previous surveys show that the mental wellbeing of PhD candidates, also of the one who are giving informal care, need attention. The current COVID-19 pandemic could be a factor  influencing our lives. We would like to ask you to let us know which impact the COVID-19 pandemic has on your PhD trajectory by filling in this survey.
