LAP Newsletter

July 2021

Dear fellow PhD candidates,

We hope you are doing well! Do you have any plans for the summer, vacation plans maybe? No matter where we are, science is always in our minds, right? You can send in a vacation photo to lap@lumc.nl with a science or (bio-)medical related caption or your best (or worst) pun, and we will put them in our next newsletter :)

Last month two new members joined our board, Annelieke Lemij and Pranav Mehta, to help us organize some (hopefully) live events after the summer.

This month we have a short newsletter for you. And as always, let us know if you have any questions.

Best,
The LAP board

Delays due to COVID and contract extensions
At the beginning of this year, we have notified you that the ministry of Education, Culture and Science had made some money available for contact extensions for young researchers which was distributed in May. An additional administrative agreement (bestuursakkoord) has been signed called the Nationaal Programma Onderwijs (NPO, National Program Education) on Friday 21 May.

The NPO program includes an investment of 8.5 billion Euros into the education sector - including higher education. Of this amount, 162 million is meant especially for contract extensions for young researchers - including PhD candidates. Currently, it is not known yet how and when this money will be divided and used in the LUMC. But please be aware that it is here and notify your supervisor if you think you might qualify for it. At this point, the LUMC is working out how best to deal with it, we will let you know when we have an update on this topic.

Will PhD ceremonies take place physically or online?
PhD ceremonies will take place fully online (via a livestream) or with a very limited number of people in the small auditorium at the Academy Building.
NEW RULE: besides rector, beadle, technician, promotor, secretary and paranymphs you may invite up to 10 guests to the Academy Building! The members of the opposition committee are requested to attend via livestream. For further details see the updated PhD protocol.

To make up for it, we are planning a new, bad-weather proof social event, so keep an eye on our social media.
