Dear fellow PhD candidates,
 
This month we have a short, but interesting newsletter for you about; the Leiden Drug Development Conference, the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), the LERU workshop on animal research and communication, and a call for new boardmembers to start at the end of the summer. Also, we have our boat trip this Thursday! Read below to find out more!

New board members LAP - deadline August 28
We are looking for new board members to start at the end of the summer. We represent all PhD candidates of the LUMC both locally through contact with the Graduate School and dean, and nationally through PNN. We also organize events and lectures such as the PhD day, pubquizzes, and networking events. If you are interested in becoming a board member, please send in your CV and short motivation to lap@lumc.nl before the 28th of August. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
 
07.07.2022 - Boat trip LAP - Leiden 
LAP is organizing a boat trip through the canals of Leiden. We are very happy that we received so many registrations, thank you! Unfortunately, we have reached the maximum amount of registrations right now. If you have not signed up and are interested in going, send us an email and we'll put you on the waiting list. We are looking forward to the trip and we'll send out an email to those who have previously registered.
27.09.2022 - Leiden Drug Development Conference (LDCC) - ECC Leiden
The future of drug development is the main topic on the agenda. During this conference leading scientists and professionals will tell you the latest  in their research field. And the keynote speaker Paul Stoffels (CEO Galapagos) will give his view on the topic. The aim is to actively connect business and science, discover how to reinforce each other, and work together on the future of life sciences and health. Check the website for the program and registration.

No more costs for Open Access publishing in more than 11.000 journals
The LUMC has bought off the costs of publishing an article in Open Access for more than 11.000 journals. We would like to increase the awareness of these agreements for LUMC employees. Here you will find more information on these agreements. And click here to identify for which journals these costs are bought off. 

PhD thesis spreadsheet
Click here for a public google spreadsheet in which you can leave your contact details to get in touch with other PhDers who are printing their thesis soon to get a group discount. It is your own responsibility to get in touch with each other and organize the group discount with the printing company.

26-28.09.2022 - LERU workshop for early-stage researchers on effective science communications with a focus on animals used for scientific purposes - Heidelberg, Germany
The workshop will focus on effective communications in science with a focus on animals used for scientific purposes. Hosted by 
Heidelberg University, the workshop will bring together a maximum of 23 participants to discuss key issues relevant to communicating science based on animal experiments, including the importance of transparency, when and how to best communicate their science, and what to do when it all goes wrong. Bringing together speakers from industry, universities, and external information services, we aim to help students to be better prepared for communications activities in their future careers.
 
Speakers: From LERU, Merck Communication, Tierversuche verstehen (understanding animal testing) and more.
 
The group consists of 23 participants maximum to attend the 2-day workshop (spread over three days). Accommodation and food will be paid for by Heidelberg University. Participants will need to pay for their own travel costs. A programme of evening activities will also be provided. Each LERU university can nominate 3 people of which one will be chosen to attend, more in case of residual places. If you wish to attend please send a short motivation to LAP@lumc.nl before July 6 23:59.

13-16.07.2022 - EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 - Hybrid/Leiden
The ESOF meeting is held every two years and is designed to offer the scientific community a platform for interdisciplinary and intersectional debate about scientific culture, scientific research and innovation, for and with society. This year there is a specific focus on early careers in academia and how to reimage career paths with workshops, panel discussions, debates, and networking events such as receptions, meeting key scientists or representatives of major funding organizations across Europe. Other tracks are on sustainable environment, Science and Business, Healthy Society, Space for Science with nobel laureate Ben Feringa and Freedom and Responsibility of Science. 12-16.09.2022 - Basic Methods and Reasoning in Biostatistics - LUMC
This course on biostatistics is a yearly course which covers the fundamental toolbox of biostatistical methods plus a solid methodological basis to properly interpret statistical results. Importantly, this course is a mandatory part of the LUMC Graduate School Programme as well as a prerequisite for any of the advanced biostatistical courses offered by LUMC. Click here to read more and to register.
