LAP Newsletter

May 2020

Dear fellow PhD candidates,

Hi there! In the newsletter you are about to briefly scroll through, we put together a list of links and tips for working from home. So this newsletter is a home-survival-guide, if you will. There is some general information, information specific for international students, and some tips from us for courses and entertainment. Meanwhile, we are also working from home, putting the finishing touch on our brand-new website to improve the provision of information to PhD candidates. The reveal is coming soon!

Lastly, we are organizing a webinar for PhD candidates on important info regarding corona crisis. Do you have any questions you would like to have answered? You can send them in with this questionnaire or by mailing us at lap@lumc.nl.

If you like what we do, consider joining our board, because we are looking for new boardmembers!

Stay safe, and please contact us if you have any questions or suggestions.

Best wishes,
The LAP board

General Information

Webinar
The corona crisis has changed the working situation for the PhD candidates in the LUMC. We are organizing a webinar, to talk about the subjects and questions that you now might have regarding your project, if that be the suspended labwork, the contract period or something else entirely.

Therefore we are trying to see what information you still would like to have. Please fill in this one minute anonymous questionaire if you have any subject suggestions or questions, or, alternatively, contact us at lap@lumc.nl.

Call of the Education Union A0b

Information for international students
As international PhD candidate it can be especially hard to get the right information. Therefore we put together some links and tips to English webpages that may help you:

The EBrok is mandatory for all PhD candidates of the LUMC. It can be done from home.

Coursera, edX
Coursera and edX have a lot of free online courses you can follow. Leiden University has a tonne, and we also quite liked the one on Genomic Data Science from John Hopkins University and on R programming from HarvardX. (note: a lot of them are free, but you have to pay if you want a certificate)

CRISP/Cas9 crash course for beginners
A nice online course on CRISPR/Cas9, the latest emerging revolutionizing gene-editing technology in the biological world.

Online biology courses from iBiology
iBiology offers online biology courses for early career scientists, biology students and educators. For instance Image Analysis with ImageJ and Cellprofiler.

EMBL
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the world’s leading research institutions. They offer e-learning content that features research carried out and technologies used at EMBL, and they have a youtube series for researchers.

Gannt Chart for PhD planning
Not exactly a course, but we found it very helpful in planning our PhD project. Just look up 'Gannt Chart Template' on google to find the most efficient way to plan a long term project. If you are lazy, you can click the link where we googled it for you.

Entertainment

We found some links that keeps us entertained from home.
