It's that time of the year when we've gathered a delightful mix of events and insights to brighten up your inbox. Are you almost finished with your thesis? Don't miss your chance to enter the prestigious Young Medical Delta Thesis Awards. LBSP X LAP Connect - 14.11.2023 - 17.00 @ BioPartner 1
On the 14th of November, the second LBSP x LUMC Association for PhD candidates (LAP) career event will take place. What is going on at the LBSP?  Which innovations and clever ideas are just a stone’s throw away from the LUMC? And what do we, as LUMC PhD candidates, have to offer? All these questions we aim to answer during multiple rounds of speed-dating in which small groups of students can chat with company representatives. Christmas Drinks LAP X LEO - 13.12.2023 @ de Burcht
Together with LEO we are organizing Christmas Drinks in de Tuinzaal of Grand Café de Burcht to reign in the festive season. The event will take place on the 13th of December from 17.30 - 20.00. Click here to sign up! Tickets are €4.80 including service fee and cover drinks and snacks during the evening. We hope to see you all on the 13th!


PhD thesis spreadsheet
Click here for a public google spreadsheet in which you can leave your contact details to get in touch with other PhDers who are printing their thesis soon to get a group discount. It is your own responsibility to get in touch with each other and organize the group discount with the printing company. Proefschrifspecialist.nl has now also offered a special discount for the printing of your thesis, depending on the group size.

Maximum number of LUMC open access articles for publisher Springer almost reached
The Open Access agreement that the Dutch Universities concluded with Springer is based on a maximum of 2,067 articles per year. The possibility to publish Open Access articles in Springer journals was widely used this year. When the cap is reached, articles that are accepted during the remainder of 2023 will no longer be eligible for Open Access without costs to Leiden and LUMC researchers. More information can be found here. You can stay informed about the status of the publishing deal by signing up for a ‘notify-me service’. You can also use this service to receive updates about other publishers with a maximum amount of open access publications.

Laboratory Diagnosis of Human Parasitic Infections - 22.01.2024 - 02.02.2024

Seminar epi-metabolic coupling coordinates early development - by Jan Zylicz - 07.11.2023 - 14:15-15:15 @ Burumazaal, building 3 
Jan Zylicz' group studies the role of this interplay during the first lineage specification decision in human development: from pluripotent to trophoectodermal lineage. Doing so, they identified that metabolism plays a key in this decision by directly impacting chromatin modifiers and signaling pathways. His talk will highlight the importance of these non-canonical functions of metabolism in signaling towards chromatin and regulating cell identity.

From PhD, PostDoc to group leader: Why you might want to stay in academia by Jan Zylicz - 07.11.2023 - 16:15-17:00 @ Lecture Hall 3, building 1
Jan Zylicz currently is a group leader at the University of Copenhagen. Why did he decide to stay in academia? What career steps did he take? Did he consider other career paths? Zylicz will share his experiences and answer all the questions you may have on his career choices in this lecture. Before the lecture, there will be the possibility to speak with Jan Zylicz during drinks at Het Paleijs from 15:15-16:15.

Consciousness in humans and in other things - 07.12.2023 - 15:00 - 16:30 @ Burumazaal, building 3
What is consciousness? And what defines the self? Anil Seth will share his theories to answer these fundamental questions and inspire you to reflect on the way we look at healthcare, research and AI. Anil Seth is a Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, neuroscientist, author, and public speaker who has pioneered research into the brain basis of consciousness for more than twenty years. His mission is to advance the science of consciousness, and to use its insights for the benefits of society, technology, and medicine.

Advanced Course Infection and Immunity - 15.01-2024 - 26.01-2024
This course is intended for PhD students/OiOs. Interested participants can apply for this course via this link. Registrations close at the beginning of December 2023. The course has a limited capacity, with priority given to PhD students/OiOs who are more advanced in the PhD trajectory. For further information about the course, please contact Ramon Arens.

Introductory meetings
These meetings are organized five times a year, and are compulsory for all new PhD candidates. You preferably attend the meeting within the first 2-3 months after registration. For 2023 we’ve started planning new dates for the introductory meetings:

This workshop is part of the Leiden University mandatory wide program to make PhD candidates familiar with the different concepts related to scientific conduct and integrity. The workshop is taught by the LUMC Graduate School. Click here to register for one of the start dates.
